Mentor Program

A great way to strengthen and develop professionals.

The Mentor Program

AFP Golden Gate's popular Mentor Program has provided one-to-one support for hundreds of professionals. Whether you wish to learn more about a specific area of fundraising, are new to, curious about or experienced in the profession, or simply enjoy sharing your expertise with others, you'll find the Mentor Program rewarding. In 2018, we once again welcome the partnership of the Northern California Planned Giving Council (NCPGC) in the program.

Mentors are senior fundraising professionals who volunteer their time. They commit to a minimum of two hours per month to mentor their Fellows, assisting with specific fundraising and career development issues.

Fellows represent a wide range of experience, organization type, and budget size. Some are development directors who work alone in a small office. Others are executive directors who spend a large amount of time fundraising. Fellows may be seasoned or new to the field. What they share is an idea of where they can use support from a Mentor.

NEW IN 2019!

This year, the Mentor Program Year will be split into six-month cycles. The March Cycle runs through August 2019, and The August Cycle runs through January 2020.

Among the reasons for the change: Many Fellows lean toward seeking a Mentor for a short period of time, while others want help with a specific issues or project. In addition, the half-year mini or flex-mentor program offered in recent years has proved increasingly popular. The new two cycle program also accommodates those who want longer term input from a Mentor by simply signing up for both cycles. This provides maximum flexibility for both Mentors and Fellows.

Activities per Cycle include:
- One-to-one Mentor/Fellow matches.
- Two Mentor Program Online Clinics held from 9:00-10:00AM (March Cycle: 4/12 & 7/12 + August Cycle: 9/20 & 12/5).
- A Mentor Program meetup at one of the informal Unplugged networking events (date TBA).
- Free registration via promo code to AFP Golden Gate Noon Online classes (ending January 2020).
